Commonwealth Ports Authority Executive Director Christopher Tenorio reports to the CPA board during a meeting in the Ports of Saipan conference room.

THE Commonwealth Ports Authority is “working on” the issues concerning some facilities at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport ahead of the Federal Aviation Administration officials' visit.

In his report to the CPA board of directors on Friday, CPA Executive Director Christopher Tenorio said FAA Office of Western Pacific Region Director Mark Grady and Airport Compliance and Management Analysis Director Kevin Willins will be visiting Saipan on Aug. 21.

Tenorio also reported that CPA continues to work on some issues involving Saipan airport, for which the board’s Airport Operations Committee had expressed concern during its meeting on June 29.

These issues include the cracks on the Saipan airport runway, but the construction safety plan is still with the FAA for its review and approval.

The committee is also concerned about the maintenance of baggage bins. Right now, Tenorio said, CPA is still looking at “different funding sources” to move ahead with the maintenance of the facility.

He added that Elevator No. 3 and Conveyor No. 6 at the airport are back in service, but the repair of Conveyor No. 5 is still “awaiting a contractor.”

In their last annual inspection, federal inspectors found at least two non-compliant matters at the Saipan airport, one non-compliance at the Tinian airport and five non-compliance at the Rota airport.

Tenorio said CPA has until Aug. 31, 2023 to address its non-compliance.
